Printing Turnaround Times South Africa: Planning Guide
Printing turnaround is not determined by quantity alone. A realistic production date starts after the final specification, print-ready artwork, commercial approval/payment requirements and proof are complete, and it must account for stock, finishing, binding, drying/curing where applicable, packing and delivery.
This guide explains how to plan a deadline without assuming that every product can be produced same-day or within 24 hours.
What Usually Starts the Production Clock?
- Written quotation/specification accepted
- Required payment or account approval completed
- Final print-ready artwork supplied
- Proof approved
- Stock/material availability confirmed
- Production slot confirmed where the job is urgent
Jobs That Can Sometimes Move Quickly
Simple digital products with print-ready files and available stock may be suitable for expedited production. Print Norwood has dedicated pages for same-day business cards, 24-hour flyers and urgent printing Johannesburg. Availability must still be confirmed for the specific job.
What Adds Time?
- Artwork corrections or missing fonts/images
- Physical proofs or samples
- Special-order paper/material
- Lamination, foil, debossing, Spot UV or specialist finishing
- Die-cutting or new tooling
- Perfect/PUR binding, hardcover construction or complex assembly
- Many language/title/version changes
- Individual packing, carton labelling or kitting
- Multi-destination dispatch
- Large quantities requiring a longer press/bindery schedule
Books, Manuals and Workbooks
Bound publications need time not only to print but also to collate, bind, trim, inspect and pack. A final page count and approved cover are important because late pagination changes can affect the spine and cover setup.
Packaging and Die-Cut Work
Packaging may require dieline confirmation, material selection, proof/sample approval, tooling and assembly tests. New structural designs normally require more planning than a repeat job produced from an approved dieline and known material.
How to Work Backwards From an Event Date
- Set the date the printed material must be physically received—not the event date.
- Allow time for delivery and receiving.
- Allow time for packing, finishing and production.
- Allow time for proof approval.
- Set an internal artwork deadline earlier than the printer’s production start date.
Urgent Jobs: What to Send First
Send the product, quantity, final size, page count/construction, stock, colour, finishing, exact required receiving date, delivery destination and print-ready artwork. Asking “how soon?” without the full specification can only produce an estimate.
Use the Printing Specification Generator to send all production details in one brief.
